Colon cancer: diagnosis and care

Colon cancer develops in the main part of the large intestine. Treatment planning considers the diagnosis, extent of disease and the person’s clinical condition.

Is colon cancer the same as rectal cancer?

Both are described as colorectal cancer, but arise in different locations. The site of origin can change the tests needed and treatment strategy.

How can I understand the diagnosis?

Ask for an explanation of the colonoscopy and pathology reports. Understanding where the lesion is and what the tissue sample showed helps you follow the clinical discussion.

Why assess disease extent?

Staging investigates cancer extent and informs planning. The team selects the tests needed; patients should not arrange tests themselves based on a generic list.

When may surgery be indicated?

Surgery is a treatment option for colon cancer. Its indication and the need for other treatments depend on stage, disease characteristics and clinical assessment.

How should follow-up be prepared?

Keep surgery and treatment reports. At follow-up appointments, discuss recovery, eating, bowel function and the return-visit plan set by the team.

You do not need to know where to start.

Reception can advise on availability and preparation. Already have test results? Mention this when requesting an appointment and ask how to present your records.
